Windows XP End Of Support

As of today, Microsoft will be placing an end of support warning notice on systems still running Windows XP via the Windows Update system.

What does this mean to you?
If you still have systems that are running Windows XP, you will no longer receive security updates and patches for these systems after 8th April 2014.

Your PC will still function as it does now, but you will be more at risk from viruses and malware and no new features will be made available from Microsoft. You may also find that suppliers of any other software you run will also drop support on Windows XP systems as well as they will no longer be receiving any technical assistance from Microsoft either.

Microsoft's reason for stopping XP support is best summed up in their own words here:

"In September of 2007 we communicated Microsoft’s plans to end support for Windows XP SP3 and how that may affect your business. Microsoft recognizes how integral Windows XP has been in your operations, thus we have provided support for these past 12 years. The time has come for us, however, to invest our resources toward supporting more recent technologies such that we can continue to deliver great new experiences for our customers, as their IT environment evolves to meet the changing needs of their users in this increasingly social and mobile world.

After April 8, 2014, technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available, nor will automatic updates be sent that have helped protect organization’s PCs (including home users). For specific details, please review our Windows XP end of support information here. "
